Memory, loss, and return
The temple's history runs on two clocks at once — a spiritual lineage remembered by the family across fourteen centuries, and a physical structure that has been rebuilt more than once. Both are true, and both are told here.
The shrine is established
Sri Atmarama Swami, a master of the southern Indian Avadhoota–Yogishwara tradition, anchors the sacred current that the family still traces its worship to today.
The oldest surviving structure
While the spiritual origin reaches back to 596 A.D., the earliest physical fabric that survives is traditionally dated to the medieval period.
Dispersal, under Marthanda Varma
During the consolidation of Travancore under Maharaja Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma — a period marked by conflict with the Ettuveetil Pillamar and wide social upheaval — the original custodial family, Namboodiri Brahmins devoted to Sri Padmanabhaswamy, scattered to Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. The shrine's original custodianship was, for a time, forgotten.
An Ashtamangala Prashnam is conducted
After major reconstruction work, the family sensed that Sri Badrakali's full Chaitanya — her complete divine presence — had not yet been restored. A traditional Kerala astrological consultation surfaced unfulfilled ancestral obligations and a forgotten custodial line, prompting a search that drew on family elders, local historians, archaeologists, astrologers, and senior priests.
The lineage is found, and the shrine renewed
The search identified Srimath Paramahamsa Parivrajakacharya Sri Sri Sri Yogishwara Swami — His Holiness Sri Yogi — as spiritually connected to the shrine's original custodian lineage. Under his guidance, the Punah-Pratishtha ceremonially re-established the deity's full presence, closing a circle that had been open for two centuries.
